About the Irish Biometrics Organisation (IBO) CODE OF ETHICS

Biometric solution providers that wish to join the IBO must be willing to sign up to a code of ethics. This is to ensure that membership of the IBO can be viewed as a guarentee that the highest possible ethical standards will be practiced by the member at all times. If a member is viewed to have breached the code of ethics, membership rights can be withdrawn with immediate effect. This gives confidence that members displaying the IBO logo are reputable providers. The IBO would recommend that anybody wishing to do business with a biometric provider in Ireland should ensure that they are members of the IBO.

All members adopt and pledge to observe the following Principles and Code of Ethics:

Safeguards for the Public: Members believe that biometric technologies should be used solely for legal, ethical, and nondiscriminatory purposes. They are therefore committed to the highest standards of systems integrity and database security in order to deter identity theft, protect personal privacy, and ensure equal rights under the law in all biometric applications. Members should be registered with the Data Protection Commissioner where appropriate.

Respect for Competitive Technologies: Members adhere to a policy of mutual respect for all biometric technologies. They therefore treat their competitors with courtesy and civility in all discourse, including marketing and advertising.

Accountability in Marketing: Because truth is the key to industry credibility, members attest that their stated claims are accurate and can be independently verified by a competent authority.

Legitimacy: Membership is open to biometric developers, manufacturers, integrators, end-users and individuals who have demonstrated that their biometric technologies and applications are safe, accurate, and effective. Membership is also open to media, educational and other organisations who have an interest in biometrics technology, or who wish to ensure that best practice policies according to the IBO are implemented in their organisation.

Free Trade: Members are committed to the principles of free trade and open competition in the biometric marketplace.
